A Brief History
of Jennifer's Educational Programs
1986
– began teaching traditional dance in regional
school systems.
1992 –
BA in Vocal Music from Berea College, with high honors and awards for
participation in Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Country Dancers and
other groups. Performance and study trips to Japan, Italy, Denmark and
many US states.
1990’s – Berea
College’s Christmas Country Dance School Instructor for Garland
Dance, Women’s Ritual Dance, Children’s Singing Games, et
al
1995 – accepted
to the Kentucky Arts Council Roster of Educational Artists
1996 – Music and
Dance Faculty with the Kentucky Center and the Kentucky Department of
Education's professional development programs: Kentucky Institute for
Arts in Education and Academies for Arts and Humanities, accepted to
the VSA Arts of Kentucky Roster of Artists with qualifications for work
with Special Needs students.
1997 – accepted
to the Kentucky Center Educational Artist Showcase
2000 – trained in
Different Ways of Knowing, Kennedy Center Professional Development Method
2001 – represented
Kentucky at VSA national Conference for Artists, trained in working
with early childhood education.
2002 - published American
Folk and Modern Dance for Schools, a comprehensive American
dance resource for teachers.
2005 - published American
Heritage Playparty and Singing Games, a resource for primary
teachers

Workshops or Assembly Program(s) in Appalachian Dance, K-8

dances from circles to squares.

Dance Styles
Four-Day Residency for grades K-8
Students learn their own heritage as Americans through various dance experiences,
from early American dancing to modern aerobic dance. KERA dance
core content figures largely in this residency.

and Music of Appalachia
Four-Day Residency for grades K-8
Students learn the history of Appalachia through dance and song, and are
prepared to present a show as a final project. Concepts such as
how dance and music relate to culture, history of folk instruments, locomotor
and nonlocomotor movements, pathway, and rhythm are addressed.

Day of Appalachian Music
Workshops or Assembly Program(s) in Appalachian Music, K-12
Up to five classroom-size workshops or two assembly programs
(or some combination), in which students hear and sing selected Appalachian
songs and are introduced to the Appalachian Dulcimer as a folk instrument.
Diversity within Appalachian culture and the influences of European and
African music on American folk music are addressed.

Appalachian Songs and Singing Games
Four-Day Residency for grades K-8
Students learn about Appalachian culture through its music, including
silly songs, songs about community, and historic singing games.
Students discover the diversity in Appalachian heritage and the influence
of European and African music on American musical culture.

I Can Play the Appalachian Lap Dulcimer
Five-Day Residency for grades 3-8
Students learn to play the Appalachian Lap Dulcimer, a traditional Appalachian
stringed instrument, and are prepared to present a short program at the
end of the visit, augmented by Jennifer's expert performance of several
Appalachian folk songs.

Creating Cultural Theater
Five-Day Residency with two artists for up to 100 students, 5-8.
Students work together to create and produce a comedy about rural Kentucky
life in the 1940's, using as a springboard their own prior research in
the local history of their geographic area. Concepts in dance, music,
art and theater are addressed.

Twentieth Century Trends
Five-Day Residency with two artists for grades 8-12.
Students research and explore trends in dance and art from the early 1900's
through today, discussing major changes in society and the resulting changes
in artistic expression. Clear exploration of these changes, and
experience in the artistic forms, allow students to evaluate the trends
in their own lifetimes in the larger context of the past 100 years.
Students finish the week with a dance presentation and 8'x8' mural to
share with the community.

Living History Assembly
One-Day Assembly and Discussion for grades K-12
Students see Jennifer's original one-woman show, Josie,
A Mountain Portrait, and then participate in an open discussion about
the conception and production of this historical monologue. Jennifer
talks about the script, costumes, and musical selections, and artist,
Alfredo Escobar addresses set design, stage plot and setup challenges
in different venues.

Dance Styles: An Introduction
Participants will learn to dance and to teach three traditional dances
common to the Appalachian area, as well as the history and heritage behind
the rich traditions of Appalachia and early America. Participants will
be provided with written instructions for each dance, a CD of music for
each dance, and contact information for more resources.

Dance
for Schools: An Effective Method for Teaching Dance in Kentucky
By far the most in-depth seminar Jennifer Rose offers, this workshop invites
participants to learn Jennifer’s own method of teaching dance to
young people – a method that has been proven successful in over
ten years of practice. Participants will learn to dance and teach three
folk dances, three creative dance activities, and two integrated arts
activities using Jennifer’s manual, American
Folk and Modern Dance for Schools. Participants will be provided
with a full copy of the manual, including a compact disc of music and
a video of short dance demonstrations.

Appalachian
Dulcimer: An Introduction
Participants will learn the basics of playing a full-size Appalachian
dulcimer, supplied by Jennifer Rose. An introduction to tuning, noting
and strumming will be presented, and participants will play three songs
from the American traditional repertoire using the techniques presented
in the workshop. Participants will be provided with notation for the songs
they learn as well as a list of resources for more information.

Appalachian
Traditions: Dance and Dulcimer
During the first half, participants will learn to dance and teach three
dances from the Appalachian tradition, along with the history of each
dance and an overview of the history and heritage of the Appalachian region.
They will be provided with instructions for each dance, as well as a cassette
of music used in the workshop.
In the second half, participants will learn three songs on the Appalachian
lap dulcimer, a native Appalachian instrument. They will be introduced
to basic tuning, strumming and noting techniques, and will be provided
with notation to the three songs they learn.
